Residence Life Vision Statement and Learning Outcomes

We, as Georgia Tech Residence Life, create environments where residents transform themselves into leaders of society. We are committed to Community Engagement, Discovery, Diversity and Personal Development. These beliefs, presented in a residential setting, enrich student learning. Georgia Tech Residence Life provides for ...

Community Engagement - The residential experience requires the student to learn how to balance one's needs with those of the larger group; how one's actions affect others. Becoming aware of the greater world, one's role within it, and ways to make a difference through service and leadership, are important knowledge areas. Residents will learn:

  • to identify with the Georgia Tech campus culture and make positive contributions to it.
  • to articulate Housing and Institute policies and how their behavior affects both themselves and the surrounding community.
  • to identify themselves as leaders and serve their communities.
  • to examine their impact on the environment and their communities: campus, local, national, and global.

Discovery - Engaging with the academic community, gaining knowledge within and outside the formal classroom and lab, applying this learning to new situations, and incorporating an achievement orientation into one's self-perception, are important for Georgia Tech residential students to encounter. Residents will learn:

  • to incorporate department resources into their educational pursuits.
  • to identify the value of, and engage in, faculty interaction opportunities within a residential setting.
  • to apply knowledge gained from academic and co-curricular activities to new situations they encounter.
  • to value education as a life-long process and to understand grades are only a component of it.

Diversity - Living in Georgia Tech residence halls will expose the resident to many people who are different than oneself, culturally, ethnically, and socially. Learning about these differences, respecting them and incorporating this knowledge into one's world view are important knowledge bases for the resident to comprehend. Residents will learn:

  • to explore their personal identity through recognition of the similarities and differences in others.
  • to utilize effective communication skills to engage in open dialogue about diversity.
  • to discuss the correlation between local and world issues and themselves.
  • to demonstrate the skills necessary to advocate for issues of social change.

Personal Development - The college experience provides for learning in the areas of relationships, acquisition of life-skills and maturity. Georgia Tech Residence Life will provide opportunities for resident learning, leading to personal development and self-advocacy that are the hallmarks of an independent adult. Residents will learn:

  • to develop relationships and resolve relationship conflicts.
  • to demonstrate life skills that will enhance them personally and professionally.
  • to integrate the components of a healthy lifestyle.
  • to evaluate their decision-making process to incorporate new insights and experiences.
