Important Information for Students

ResNet recommends you use the wired LAN internet connection when your in your room. It's 20 times faster than the LAWN service. For help with registering your device, go to our registration page.

IMPORTANT
Please disable / turn off your wireless when connected to the LAN connection.
Both services will cancel one another out and you may not gain internet service.

NOTE: you SHOULD NOT have more than ONE anti-virus software running on your computer at a time!

We strongly recommend that you install the FREE OIT McAfee software onto your computer from software.oit.gatech.edu. ResNet and OIT worked on more than 3,000 computers infected with Conficker in April of 2009. Not one of these computers had the OIT Mcafee software running before they were infected. For your data's sake, protect your computer with OIT's McAfee.

We know you are eager to get online on your new blazing fast internet connection to stream media fast, get information even faster, and give you that edge you need online, and we are here to help you do exactly that!

ResNet provides the Internet, Telephone and Cable TV services to all students living on-campus (YOU!). Going to Georgia Tech has its fair share of disadvantages - the freshman hill, all-nighters, and the Physics courses - but the fact that we have one of the fastest Internet connections in the nation (second only to the Pentagon) provides some relief. The on-campus cable TV connection provides over 100 channels for your viewing pleasure, including 17 international channels and the major networks in high-def for the TV sets that support it. Also, each room is equipped with a land line telephone connection, using which our residents can make free local calls to all 404, 770 and 678 numbers - no need to use up your precious minutes when you have the landline at your convenience.

Another thing that we take great pride is in our state-of-the-art wireless internet access with complete coverage in all residence halls. Wireless works great when you have a study group meeting in your room (each Access Point can have up to 10 connections) or you need to access your email while having a meal at the dining halls or the student center. However, we at ResNet do not recommend our residents completely depending on the wireless when they are at their residence. Plugging the computer into the Ethernet port on the wall can provide you with up to 20 times faster speeds than the wireless, and its also more secure and reliable.

• In your room, the Ethernet and Telephone jacks are almost identical, so one needs to ensure the cables are plugged into the correct port. Usually, the data jack is the lower one, unless otherwise stated by labels.
• When registering oneself on the Ethernet network, it is recommended to disable your wireless beforehand.
• In case you need to run a web-server from your room or want to host multiplayer online games, you need to disable Inbound Service Security while registering on the network.
• If you plan to use a router in your room to connect different devices on the network, please be sure to disable any broadcast of wireless network.
• To access free and discounted software available to GT students, log onto software.oit.gatech.edu .
