Department of Housing
Residence Life Staff Alternate Policy

The Department of Housing student staff selection process is designed to make hiring offers to as many candidates as possible after the major Selection Weekend. Because the total number of vacancies is not known prior to the end of the Spring Semester, the Department must offer a number of candidates "alternate" status. Further, unforeseen openings occur throughout the year, and the Department must have a ready pool of candidates from which to fill these vacancies.

The number of candidates offered "alternate" status will vary each year, but experience has shown that nearly 95% of all alternates are offered a student staff position. The Department of Housing is committed to placing all of these candidates. Placement into open positions will be based upon the "needs" of a particular position and staff and the "attributes" of a particular alternate. As with all hiring offers, candidates must meet all eligibility (academic, judicial, and financial) requirements.

All candidates who accept their "alternate" status agree to the following:

  1. Once placed in the "alternate pool," a candidate will be considered for all available positions.
  2. An alternate candidate may be removed from further consideration if they decline an offer.
  3. If you are offered alternate status, you may be offered a student staff position at any time following the official hiring period. For example, you may be called the week before Fall classes begin regarding a job opening.
